Model names matter.

This matrix applies to the named Black models. Do not transfer a Black-model specification to HERO Session, HERO Mini, the small 2024 HERO, MAX or another similarly named camera.

What sample rate means here

GoPro’s current GPMF reference describes GPS9 at approximately 10 Hz for the relevant later cameras and HERO13. HERO5 launch documentation lists GPS5 at approximately 18 Hz. Actual measured frequency can vary slightly, and a metadata track’s own storage cadence is not the same as the samples contained inside it.

Where GoPro telemetry lives

GoPro stores GPMF in a time-indexed metadata track inside MP4. It can include GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope, exposure and other streams. It is not a separate CSV or GPX file and is not available for live use while recording.

Practical buying answer

  • Best recent standalone choice: HERO13 Black, because it combines current video capability with restored GPS.
  • Strong used-value choice: HERO11 Black, when condition and battery are good.
  • Good with an external logger: HERO12 Black, if video matters and GPS comes from another device.
