Motorsport loggers: recorded channels and practical differences.

This section compares the documented GNSS rate, motion sensors, vehicle-data connections, storage and exported files. It does not treat headline accuracy as a complete measure of usefulness.

Logger hardware — 12 devices

Portable GPS receivers are simple to install. ECU-capable lap timers can record more channels, but require compatible protocols, cables and configuration.

Practical advantages

  • 10 Hz or 25 Hz GNSS can describe a lap in more detail than a typical phone recording.
  • Dedicated storage reduces dependence on a phone remaining connected.
  • Some systems combine GPS, IMU, lap timing and ECU channels on one clock.
  • Documented export formats improve post-session analysis options.

Practical limitations

  • A high sample rate does not guarantee positional accuracy.
  • Vehicle channels depend on the car, ECU protocol and physical connection.
  • Vendor software or proprietary formats may restrict the workflow.
  • Separate camera footage still needs reliable synchronisation.
RACEBOX / PORTABLE GNSS

RaceBox Mini S

Standalone 25 Hz GNSS and motion logger.

GNSS · 25 HZACCELEROMETERGYROSCOPEINTERNAL STORAGENO DIRECT CAN / OBD-II

RaceBox documents 25 Hz delivered GNSS and motion output, standalone session storage, Bluetooth LE and CSV, VBO and GPX cloud exports.

Practical use: suited to portable position and motion logging. It does not record ECU channels directly, and separately recorded video must be synchronised.
AIM / LAP TIMER + LOGGER

AiM Solo 2 DL

25 Hz GPS with IMU and ECU interfaces.

GPS · 25 HZ3-AXIS ACCELEROMETER3-AXIS GYROSCOPECAN / ECU · VEHICLE DEPENDENT4 GB INTERNAL

The DL model adds CAN, RS232 and K-Line interfaces. Available RPM, throttle, temperatures and other channels depend on a supported ECU definition and correct installation.

Practical use: suited to lap timing and combined GPS, motion and supported ECU logging. Installation and software setup are more involved than a portable receiver.
RACELOGIC / PORTABLE GNSS

VBOX Sport V3

25 Hz GNSS logger using VBO files.

GNSS · 25 HZ V3SD CARDINTERNAL / EXTERNAL ANTENNANO ECU CHANNELS BY ITSELF

Current V3 hardware records 25 Hz GNSS to an SD card in Racelogic VBO format. Earlier VBOX Sport hardware may be 10 Hz, so the generation or serial range matters.

Practical use: suited to portable GPS analysis in the Racelogic workflow. It does not add camera video or ECU channels by itself.
RACEBOX / PHONE-DEPENDENT GNSS

RaceBox Mini

25 Hz GNSS and motion output without standalone storage.

GNSS · 25 HZACCELEROMETERGYROSCOPEPHONE REQUIREDNO INTERNAL STORAGE

The Mini supplies position and motion data to a compatible phone application. Unlike the Mini S, it does not store a standalone session internally.

Practical use: appropriate when a phone will remain connected throughout the session.
RACEBOX / EMBEDDED GNSS

RaceBox Micro

Small wired 25 Hz receiver for integration projects.

GNSS · UP TO 25 HZACCELEROMETERGYROSCOPEINTERNAL STORAGE3.5–16 V INSTALLATION

RaceBox documents multi-constellation GNSS, internal 1 kHz motion-sensor sampling, 25 Hz client output and approximately 130 minutes of storage at 25 Hz.

Practical use: requires suitable power, enclosure and mounting rather than simple dashboard placement.
RACEBOX / STANDALONE LAP TIMER

RaceBox Original

Display-equipped 10 Hz standalone lap timer.

GPS · 10 HZMOTION SENSORSBUILT-IN DISPLAYINTERNAL STORAGENO OBD-II

The original unit is self-contained and does not require a phone for live timing. Its documented GPS rate is lower than the Mini family's 25 Hz output.

Practical use: useful when a built-in live display matters more than the higher Mini-family output rate.
GARMIN / INTEGRATED COACHING

Garmin Catalyst 2

Integrated GNSS, video, display and track coaching.

GNSS · 25 HZ1440P VIDEOLAP TIMINGON-DEVICE DISPLAYAPP FOR FULL REVIEW

Garmin documents an integrated camera, 25 Hz GNSS, audible coaching and on-device summaries. Detailed review is handled through the Catalyst mobile app.

Practical use: an integrated coaching system, not a general-purpose raw CAN logger.

VBOX Video HD2

Two-camera logger with synchronised GNSS and CAN data.

GNSS · 25 HZTWO HD CAMERASLIVE OVERLAYSUP TO 80 CAN CHANNELS

Racelogic documents two waterproof 30 fps camera inputs synchronised with 25 Hz GNSS, real-time graphics and up to 80 configured CAN channels.

Practical use: reduces separate-file synchronisation, but requires a wired installation and correct CAN configuration.
OBDLINK / OBD-II INTERFACE

OBDLink MX+

Bluetooth OBD-II interface for phones and computers.

OBD-IIBLUETOOTHAPP REQUIREDVEHICLE-DEPENDENT PIDSNO INTERNAL GPS

MX+ supports legislated OBD-II protocols and additional manufacturer networks on supported vehicles. The app and requested PIDs determine the actual channel set and update rate.

Practical use: convenient for accessible engine parameters; not equivalent to unrestricted direct CAN logging.
AUTOSPORT LABS / CONFIGURABLE LOGGER

RaceCapture/Pro MK3

CAN, GPS, analog and digital motorsport logger.

GPSCAN8 EXTERNAL ANALOG INPUTSSD CARDWI-FI / BLUETOOTH

The official product brief documents configurable CAN, analog, digital and timer inputs with local storage and wireless connectivity.

Practical use: intended for custom installations where sensor wiring and channel configuration are acceptable.
CSS ELECTRONICS / CAN LOGGER

CANedge2 GNSS/IMU

Two-channel CAN FD/LIN logger with Wi-Fi and sensors.

2 × CAN FD2 × LINGNSS / IMU · 5 HZMF4 STORAGEWI-FI TRANSFER

CANedge2 records raw CAN/LIN to SD card in MF4. The GNSS/IMU version adds time-synchronised position, attitude, angular rate and acceleration output at up to 5 Hz.

Practical use: configurable raw-network logging and open processing; not a driver-facing predictive lap timer.
RACE TECHNOLOGY / BLACK-BOX LOGGER

Race Technology DL1

Vehicle and GPS logging without an integral display.

GPSVEHICLE INPUTSSTANDALONE LOGGINGNO INTEGRAL DISPLAY

Race Technology describes the DL1 as a compact black-box system for recording GPS and a range of vehicle data for later computer analysis.

Practical use: installed logging where post-session analysis matters more than a built-in lap display.
